Content Agility at Marklogic's Digital Publishing Symposium

Thanks to Dave Kellogg for inviting me to speak at this year's Mark Logic Digital Publishing Summit. I spoke about how the publishing industry is at a crossroads:
  • Traditional media faces revenue challenges
  • Web 2.0 startups challenged, short runway on funding, needs to become cash positive
  • Many technology options for web 2.0, content
  • XML publishing technologies mature
  • Agile processes become ‘enterprise’ ready
From there, I discussed how publishers need to build new products that offer integrated content with community and leverage technology. I then discussed how BusinessWeek moved to an agile development process (specifically, SCRUM), to build its newest product, the Business Exchange.

I will get the slides out eventually, but first I'm going to blog on a few related subjects. For now, have a look at Dave's Tweets on the talk and on the symposium.

  1. Any tips for how to budget when using SCRUM rather than waterfall? I'm finding it hard to do a big corporate five-year plan while gathering requirements and documenting iteratively. Even with a fixed bid from the vendor, how do you calculate internal resources?
