It's time for one of my favorite yearly posts where I share my top reads of the previous year. You can see my past posts of top books of 2020 and top reads of 2019. I also published my favorite books on digital transformation storytelling.
Pictured below are my top reads of 2021.
Follow me on GoodReads to see what I am currently reading. My 2021 reading challenge was to read 24 books but you'll see only 23 pictured. One read is a secret book that you can read more about here.
Diverse Reading List for a Year of Highs and Lows
My reading reflects a volatile year that started on a low with lockdowns and ended on highs with adding new StarCIO clients, completing several in-person keynotes, and hitting many personal milestones.
Here's a summary of the posts I recommend:
- My top read for CIOs is R. Ray Wang's Everybody Wants to Rule the World, where he shares how large enterprises should compete with the digital giants. Other good reads are Steven Kotler's, The Art of Impossible: A Peak Performance Primer and Matt Caulkin's Hyperautomation.
- Aspiring CEOs must read Jay Steinfeld's Lead from the Core: The 4 Principles for Profit and Prosperity. The book is filled with key learnings and stories that you may only get from a CEO that lives and breathes culture while truly understanding digital technology's impacts.
- Attention innovators! My favorite books include Suneel Gupta's Backable: The Surprising Truth Behind What Makes People Take a Chance on You and Rahul Bansode's Digital Roadmap: A Transformational Journey From Analog To A Digital Business Model.
- Looking to build influence? I really enjoyed Kelly Seelig's Right Brain Girl Left Brain World: One woman's journey to find her voice. I also recommend Adam Grant's Think Again: The Power of Knowing What You Don't Know and Jon Levy's You're Invited: The Art and Science of Cultivating Influence.
- When you are at a low point, two books really helped me climb out. Ethan Kross's Chatter: The Voice in Our Head, Why It Matters, and How to Harness It is a must-read. I also really enjoyed Matt Haig's The Midnight Library and Yo-Yo Ma's Beginner's Mind.
- My personal favorite Audible of 2021was Stanley Tucci's Taste: My Life through Food. Please, Mr. Tucci, write and record a sequel! I also very much enjoyed Tom Vitale's In the Weeds: Around the World and Behind the Scenes with Anthony Bourdain and Michael Browne's Pinot Rocks: A Winding Journey through Intense Elegance.
