Running an Evolving IT via Consumerization, Contextualization, and Confluence

In today’s digital dynamic and technical environments where Information and Technology are being used significantly around the globe for revenue-generating initiatives and business transformation. It is a strategic imperative to broaden IT outlook, embrace IT consumerization and emerging trend, envision the bigger picture, emphasize contextualization, explore the art of possibility, and ensure digital confluence.

IT consumerization: With lightweight digital technologies, more and more businesses expect the consumerization style responsiveness from IT. IT consumerization trends provide an important opportunity for the IT organization to speed up the transformation from a reactive support center to a proactive business partner. Forward-looking IT leaders have encountered an IT consumerization mentality, take an outside-in business lens to determine actual strategic business need or the IT impact on the organization as a whole. Although it’s not an easy transition, as moving from an overly rigid and controlling type of IT department to a flexible and proactive IT requires IT leaders becoming the business strategists, and having IT staff with both business acumen and technical expertise to solve business problems. As now users have the opportunity to be more selective in terms of how they want to consume their IT. Productivity is a noble business goal behind the consumerization of IT and this is as a snowballing trend that will be adopted by many different kinds of industries. But there is a lot of risks and planning required for embracing the "consumerization of IT.” IT management needs to ensure its strategy and practices allowing the digital speed, the maturity level of IT organization matches the requirements of strategic business goals, and IT teams are good at quality products/services delivery, cost optimization, and risk management.

IT contextualization: Traditional IT organizations were often run as a siloed support center or an order taker, and CIOs are technology geeks or tactical managers who don’t understand the business side of story comprehensively. IT contextualization is about running IT as an integral part of the company by having business context; gaining an in-depth understanding of specific cause and effect in a specific context or the core issue of the situation which leads to a better solution. In the dynamic digital business, logic is often nonlinear and multifaceted, IT is in a unique position to oversee the business. Thus, IT management should practice Systems Thinking to gain a contextual understanding of where all the functional boundaries are, the scope and context of the problem, see a larger system with interactive pieces and “conflict” goals, and create the relevant context to make an everlasting solution. Otherwise, you perhaps only fix the symptom or cause more side effect later on.

IT confluence:
The growth of information is exponential. IT is shifting from “T“ hardware driven to “I” information oriented. The power of information is to empower the business with real-time insight across the organization in ways never possible before. Information confluence means breaking down functional silos or geographical borders to streamline data flow and make sure information integrity and consistency. Information confluence further streamlines idea flow, and effective innovation management requires a suitable process as part of the holistic system to ensure innovation confluence. More specifically, innovation confluence is achieved by establishing an innovation framework, taking structural processes and leveraging efficient technological tools to design, produce, or improve products, services, processes, or business models that deliver new value to customers or satisfy employees. Running a high mature digital organization is about harnessing cross-functional communication and real-time collaboration to create multiple pathways for enforcing digital confluence.

Organizations across vertical sectors respond to the external environment as geopolitics, economic cycles, rapid innovation, and social expectations change the business landscape and blur the digital territories. The emerging digital trends make a great impact on corporate structures, work processes, and management styles. It’s time to redefine digital IT as a trustful business partner to walk the talk and lead the change within the organization. An evolving digital IT organization rides above the learning curve to improve the overall business effectiveness, responsiveness, flexibility, performance, and maturity.
