To run an innovative IT organization, the more difficult challenge is not just about launching successful teams, but maintaining their motivation and focus, cultivating the positive attitude and building a culture of risk tolerance and doing more with innovation. The success of IT is based on both operational excellence and innovation competence. Not every change is innovation, but innovation is always the most wanted change for either driving business growth or delighting people.

Structure creative processes and boost creative performance: Digital IT needs to spend more time and resource on innovation-related activities. An organization that has a lightweight process and collaborative culture allows ideas to flow, get protected, channeled and nurtured will succeed more often than an organization that has overly rigid processes and functional silos. Not only should IT play an active role in designing, developing, and producing innovative products or services, but also IT is in a unique position to influence the business’s “personality.” In practice, innovation in the corporate world has a lot to do with fostering a creative environment, building heterogeneous teams to boost creative performance. You have to live it and breathe it, otherwise, you will feel stuck. By leveraging powerful digital platforms and technologies, organizations can be more effective in executing innovative ideas. Generally speaking, an organization that has a lightweight process which allows creativity and innovation to flow, get protected, channeled and nurtured will succeed more often than an organization that does not have such a process.



Apply the systematic innovation management discipline: Due to the fact that innovating in today’ digital world has become increasingly complex in nature. Often, organizations can no longer rely on a single individual or team to drive innovation. It’s important to be able to co-create in a digital ecosystem. In fact, Information Technology enables companies to leverage their various environments or ecosystems to pursue innovation opportunities, take structural innovation approach, and accelerate innovation performance. Every organization needs to develop their tailored innovation practices by leveraging effective technologies, tools, or methodologies and apply them wisely with the expertise to really add value or drive innovation. Sometimes, when one business area has a new product or service that can be used by another, IT leaders can scale up innovation practices and amplify innovation effect.

CIOs as “Chief Innovation Officer” should be able to encourage free thinking and experimenting, practice intrapreneurship, have the right dose of creative tension and enable healthy competition to spark creativity and accelerate innovation.
