Running a Predictive, Precise, and Proactive Digital IT

Running a predictive, precise and proactive digital IT is all about improving IT maturity. It can further accelerate business changes and make a leap of digital transformation.

All forward-looking organizations are declaring they are in the information management business regardless of the sectors and nature of the business. IT is thriving to grow vigorously, to flourish and become the game changer of the business. It is important to run a predictive, precise, and proactive digital IT organization with interdisciplinary management practices to reach the next phase of digital blossom.

Predictive IT: The abundance of information brings both significant opportunities and enormous risks in business today, organizations can harness the power of data to provide the business with a more fact-based vision of where to aim and how to get there.  Information-based forecasting is crucial to bring both insight and foresight of the business. To predict is to control; to co-create is to influence what you would like to bring to the table. It helps the organization align their business reality with digital strategy, develop the future perspective, bring people together in a common and committed effort, and move people in the right direction. Prediction can be an outcome of the controllable relationships within a system. In a business scope, there are some of the important bits and bytes of information needed to forecast a new market, an emerging technology trend, or the business growth opportunities. Digital CIOs need to have the technological vision and awareness, ask themselves or others: What’re the emerging technology trends? What technology would we need? What is the trend for those types of technology? Etc. Proposing new technologies would be the final touch. Some trends are more significant than others in their impact on business growth. Some corrections require more drastic paradigm shifts with corresponding economic impacts or predictable political challenges. Foresight is also an ongoing conversation. CIOs can share their technological vision at the big table; advocate future trends and promote their IT strategy which needs to be an integral component of the business strategy. Running a predictive IT means in such an organization, information and technology intend to become the game changer and innovation driver of the business.

Precise IT: Precise Information Systems are the backbone and provide valuable information for business growth and improve the organizational responsiveness. The goal of information management is to process raw data and abstract useful information from it. Running a precise IT to practice effective Information Management is to connect people with the right information at the right time and location, to ensure that accurate information is accessible and shared within relevant business units, coming up with solutions to either existing or emerging business problems. The science of information management is to optimize its usage, how to refine information into knowledge and business insight and achieve its value and full potential. The Information Management lifecycle is the overall business process of aligning the usage of information through information precision and assurance management to solve issues such as: What data you have, in what format, the location and method it is held, information accessibility or reliability, as well as information exploitation, to ensure that the information refined, can collaboratively enable and fully support the business objectives. If the information is unavailable, inaccurate, lost, stolen, or compromised, it will hinder the achievement of business goals and even misled the business in the wrong direction. Thus, information precision directly impacts decision effectiveness and strategy management success rate.

Proactive IT: With the overwhelming growth of information and continuous digital disruptions, IT is impacting every business unit and becoming the driving force of business changes. CIOs must be totally involved in the strategic decision of upper management and be proactively participate in business conversations, at the most senior levels to help influence and shape the business of the future. However, many IT organizations still run in a reactive mode and act as controller only, slow to change. Whenever you see "CIOs" who are purely focused on cost savings or implementing IT project only as technical challenges, and they are remote from the true business forums, they might still run IT as a silo function. IT faces unprecedented opportunity to refine its reputation, also needs to take more responsibilities as a trustful business partner, build a comprehensive change agenda and have access to both internal and external resources to achieve the desired ROI. Due to the unique position of IT to oversee the underlying business processes, if the CIOs can see beyond the confines of their own function by understanding all the moving parts of the business and contribute to the overall improvement of the business, and then this is the true proactive contribution to the business success. They should also co-develop digital strategies and advocate for “departmental immersion” to ensure IT becoming more integrated and aware of the organization as a whole. The proactive IT leaders and sponsors attended business reviews with the various business stakeholders in attendance and equally invited those business stakeholders to their IT forums. A good relationship between business and IT becomes visible by clearly defining tasks, authorities, and responsibilities.

Running a predictive, precise and proactive digital IT is all about improving IT maturity. It can further accelerate business changes and make a leap of digital transformation. Different IT organizations and enterprise as a whole are at the different stage of the business maturity. To earn its spur as the trustful business partner, IT needs to be foresightful for riding above the learning curve, be precise of delivering the right information timely, be proactive to lead changes, and be courageously to “do more with innovation.”
