The New Book “Quality Master” Chapter V Introduction: Quality Management Practices

Quality Management is like change management, which is the culture and mechanism needs to be embedded in strategy management and many other management disciplines.

Quality is defined as being suitable for its intended purpose and satisfying customer expectations. Quality is not just the specific task of one single business department or function; it is one of the management disciplines which need to be taken in a systematic way. Quality Management is not one department’s work; it needs to be embedded in all management disciplines. It’s important to develop a set of quality management practices for the business to reach the next level of digital maturity.

Making quality business planning: A business plan outlines the preferred course of action, and provide direction for the business to move forward. It’s important to understand the whole picture for making quality planning. In today’s hyperconnected and interdependent world, the business context keeps changing constantly, so plans will need to be revised constantly. Effective leadership and a clearly articulated intent are essential in planning. Otherwise, you either end up getting nowhere over a long period of time or you end up with something that does not actually meet the organizational need. As the saying goes: Plan is nothing, and planning is everything. This is particularly true in the digital era with change as the new normal. The quality planning process is never “done,” it’s a continuous business cycle, that’s part of the management process itself.

Practicing quality communication: Decentralization, diversification, information exponential are all practical reasons for enforcing quality communication. There are multiple causes for poor communication, but by far the problem happening most often is the inability of the “speaker” to adequately accept the real nature of the message or the environment. Instead of how you want to communicate, it would be better to understand what methods, means or mode of communication will make the receiver comfortable. Practice creative communication which is often more effective in today’s paradoxical and ambiguous business dynamic. It can better connect the heterogeneous audience via philosophical insight, vivid metaphors or unconventional wisdom. It’s important to build strong teams and make high-quality cross-functional communication via well mixing the richness of multiple digital communication channels. Quality communication is not just for gaining popularity, but to convey wisdom and improve business effectiveness and maturity.

Leveraging Quality Knowledge Management: We are experiencing the paradigm shift from information scarcity to knowledge abundance. Information and knowledge are the most invaluable assets besides people in the business. Knowledge management is the management with knowledge as a focus, involves the use of technologies and processes with the aim of optimizing the value that is generated, and with the goal to improve the organization’s collective learning capabilities. Developing a set of steps for capturing tacit knowledge is inherently a structured approach to Knowledge Management which will be limited in its ability to change rapidly. Organizations become more complex than ever, knowledge needs to be facilitated and managed systematically. The advantage of digital movement is that it stresses speed over perfection, allowing room for many, smaller iterations of problem-solving. Quality management directly impacts the quality of the business.

Quality Management is like change management, which is the culture and mechanism needs to be embedded in strategy management and many other management disciplines. There are dozens of specific management functions and management wheels in any organization. Quality management needs to be embedded in all of them, develop the best and next practices to run a high-quality business.
