Discover Digital Landscape at the Vista Point

It takes courage to reach the right vista point, and it takes open-mind and fresh eyes to see things differently and share the amazing views interactively and objectively.

Digital makes a significant impact on almost every aspect of our word from people, process, to technology, both horizontally and vertically. The outlines of the fully digitalized world have long been sketched, but the great architectural design with vivid pictures are the ongoing stories. Continuous digital disruptions today allow for “new” energy to flow and bring with it something that would not be born without it. Today’s business leaders are capitalizing and operating on digital ecosystems that are expanding due to the confluence of digital technologies, broader scopes of communication and collaboration, and multifaceted resource alignment. Can they reach the right vista point, look forward, look around, look above, and look underneath, to capture the multidimensional views and enjoy the digital landscape with unique scenes?

The dynamic"view of the digital landscape” has many dimensions technically, artistically, scientifically, philosophically, psychologically, and sociologically: The digital transformation is now spreading rapidly to enable organizations of all shapes and sizes to reinvent themselves in different dimensions. These dimensions interact and mutually influence each other. The digital landscape has a variety of patterns and the full spectrum of colors, neither gray nor black & white only. The digital boundary is a fluid wave, not sharp line, with the zig-zag pattern on it and they are fluid to adapt to changes. Unlike the closed mechanic system, digital businesses are organic systems which keep growing, expanding, and evolving with its environment; it spontaneously self-organizes, generates patterns, structures, business activities, and above all, creates novelty over time. Thus, those who look through the lens of the previous era will perceive their own reality very differently from those who use the lens that the dynamic new era has crafted. Digital leaders today not just reactively look through and respond to the business ecosystem; they actually proactively plan and architect the digital landscape. The goal is to design a delightful and unique scene with fully taking advantage of resources effectively and bringing fruitful innovation and top-notch business performance.

The zoom out view is about capturing the holistic picture of the interconnected and interdependent business and its ecosystem:
Every digital organization is like the switch hyper-connected to the interdependent digital ecosystem. Hyperconnectivity, interdependence, over-complexity, and ambiguity are all emerging characteristics of the digital businesses. To function seamlessly, an enterprise has to be linked to many and varying touch points between itself and its dynamic environment. The digital business today is not just working within the industry, but also permeating cross-ecosystem which is dynamic, continuous, and interactive. To achieve such a state of dynamic balance, a radically different social and economic structure will be needed and the holistic digital management is imperative. To gain the “zoom out” business views, senior business leaders are like the telescope, they are good at seeing the big picture, understanding the interconnectivity, synthesizing information, to capture the full cycle of seasonal changes and different stages of digital transformation from exploring, expanding, renewing to maturing. It takes the interdisciplinary lens to understand the digital business sociologically, technologically, psychologically, economically, and anthropologically. Try to see the ‘big picture’ and take a more holistic view of the business as a system to make sure that the whole is greater than the sum of its parts. A holistic perspective can fix the misperception by exploring multiple thought processes; willing to listen to the diverse viewpoints, zooming out to capture the bigger pictures, and seeing both the forest and the trees.

The zoom in view highlights the digital landmarks such as blue oceans, golden bridges, or the “secret gardens” as unique scenes: One of the important views of the business for top leaders is about how to zoom into the future as if it were closer. Make the vision clear and meaningful so that you know which scenes are unique, which direction you are leading organization toward and where the business is heading to. Digital means flow - information flow, mind flow, idea flow, and business flow, like many rivers merging into the blue ocean. In this information-abundant digital age, there isn't really much of an enterprise without the massive oceans of information that flow through the enterprise at any given split second. In fact, information is one of the most invaluable business assets which need to be managed successfully, also one of the biggest business challenges which should be overcome smoothly. Digital leaders themselves should like the bridge, standing at the top of oceans to connect the industrial age and digital era. Determine what the future needs to look like and then, take a strategic approach to make the vision rolling into the reality. The digital era upon us is also about innovation, zoom into innovation gardens to demystify innovation. A zoom-in digital view re-conceptualizes the future, connects the previously unconnected dots, visualizes the destination the organization intends to get and shapes the unique landscape of the digital transformation,

The dynamic digital new normal is not for static mindsets or fainted hearts. That dynamism consists in being able to break away from being static, and becoming proactive to changes. It takes courage to reach the right vista point, and it takes open-mind and fresh eyes to see things differently and share the amazing views interactively and objectively. Let go of the current reality for allowing an unknown future state to emerge and manage changes dynamically. One thing for sure, those who look through the lens of the previous era see their own reality very differently from those who use the lens that the new era has crafted. Because when a new stage emerges in the progression of society and advance of the technology, the continued use of the old paradigm, the tunnel vision or the outdated viewpoints create ever-increasing problems rather than solving problems innovatively. Thus, digital leaders and professionals have to frame a growth mindset, learn to use the new lens of the new era, acquire the new thinking and fresh insight. Dare to voyage into the deep, deep digital new normal, co-design the delightful digital landscape, co-define the comprehensive roadmap and take the digital transformation journey steadfastly.
