I am pleased to share that the AWS Asia Pacific (Osaka) Region has transitioned from a Local Region into a standard region with three Availability Zones (AZs), a broader (and growing) service portfolio, free tier option, and new pricing options. The region joins the existing 25 AZs in eight AWS Regions across Asia Pacific in Beijing, Hong Kong, Mumbai, Ningxia, Seoul, Singapore, Sydney, and Tokyo. Globally, AWS has 80 Availability Zones across 25 geographic regions, with plans to launch 15 more Availability Zones and five more AWS Regions in Australia, India, Indonesia, Spain and Switzerland.

Today's news is not only a continuation of our investment and growth in the country, it also marks a decade of AWS operating in Japan. Ten years ago in March 2011, we launched the AWS Asia Pacific (Tokyo) Region with two AZs. In 2012, we launched a third Tokyo AZ, enabling our customers to build highly available, fault-tolerant applications in Japan. In 2018, we launched the Osaka Local Region for select customers needing greater distance between AZs for specific workloads such as storage and data processing with compliance and security conformity requirements.

AWS customers using the expanded Osaka Region will gain access to an extended service portfolio, have the ability to purchase on-demand instances, and architect workloads across three AZs. At the AWS Summit Tokyo 2018, one of our customers during his keynote requested that we expand the Osaka Local Region into a standard AWS Region to provide their users and customers across the country with more services and lower latency. As you know, we listen to our customers!

The expansion of this region will also help customers meet requirements for greater separation between AZs. AZs are designed for physical resiliency to help maintain application availability in the event of power outages, internet downtime, earthquakes, floods or other natural disasters. Situated 400km from the AWS Tokyo Region, the AWS Osaka Region will help customers better isolate issues and partition applications across both AWS Regions in Japan.

AWS Global Infrastructure is built for performance, and the Osaka Region offers low latency, low packet loss, and high overall network speeds for customers planning to expand their workloads in both the AWS Asia Pacific (Tokyo) and Asia Pacific (Osaka) Regions. The average latency between the Osaka and Tokyo Regions is between 5-8ms. Customers with latency-sensitive workloads in western Japan can use the Osaka Region as their primary region.

We’re excited to help our customers in industries including public sector, gaming, life sciences, media and entertainment, and finance deliver low-latency applications for their own customers and users. Some of our customers include Bellsystem24, Gibraltar Life Insurance, KDDI, Kindai University, Mitsubishi UFJ Financial Group, Nabtesco Corporation, NTT East, NRI, OGIS-RI CO. ltd., Prudential Life Insurance, Sony Bank, Sumitomo Mitsui Trust Bank, and Tokio Marine & Nichido Fire Insurance, among others.

We’re committed to helping Japanese businesses and organizations reach their sustainability digitization goals by moving more workloads to the cloud. The Japanese government has pledged to achieve zero greenhouse gas emissions and realize a carbon-neutral society by 2050. We have a commitment through The Climate Pledge to achieve net-zero carbon by 2040 – a decade well ahead of the goals set at the 2015 Paris Agreement. I’m proud to say that we’re on track to drawing 100% of our energy needs from renewable sources by 2025.

Over the past 10 years, we have invested in infrastructure, skills and compensation, and we’re proud to have grown alongside customers in Japan who welcomed us. Now that the AWS Asia Pacific (Osaka) Region is a standard region, we are excited to see what our customers will build.
