The intranet market has substantially reinvented itself in recent years. The appetite among enterprise clients has changed dramatically: No longer are homegrown, highly customized systems desirable. Now we see organizations demand software-as-a-service delivery models, easy-to-understand pricing and packaging, and tools that are designed for nontechnical roles, including internal communicators, content authors, employee experience pros, and HR teams.

For 2022, we evaluated 12 vendors. In alphabetical order, they are: Akumina, Beezy, COYO, Igloo Software, Interact, LiveTiles, LumApps, MangoApps, Microsoft, Powell Software, Simpplr, and Unily.

We evaluated these 12 vendors against 27 criteria elements, including:

  • Core capabilities such as search, repository services, integration with common productivity suites, reporting and dashboards, branding and design tools, and content governance.
  • Emerging capabilities such as the use of AI/machine learning and knowledge or social graphs to automate tagging and provide smart recommendations.
  • Employee communication capabilities with emphasis on personalization for personas or roles, tools to map communications across common workflows or employee journeys, and support for frontline workers via mobile apps.
  • Strategy to understand how a vendor’s market approach, product vision, roadmap, partnerships, delivery model, and supporting products and services drive adoption of the platform.
