Technology’s Grand Stage: Web Summit 2023 Approaches With a Promise

Web Summit 2023 is gearing up an even bigger showdown despite recent turbulence concerning the former CEO’s comments.

Web Summit 2023 guide
  • Web Summit 2023, described as one of the premier global tech conferences, will be held in the forthcoming week.
  • Organizers, now headed by a new CEO, are gearing up for an even bigger showdown despite recent turbulence concerning the former CEO’s comments.

After managing through a light public relations chop following former Web Summit CEO Paddy Cosgrave’s comments on the conflict in Gaza-Israel, the event seems to be on track. However, Web Summit 2023, touted as one of Europe’s largest tech conferences, could face greater turbulence as multiple high-profile investors and companies have pulled out of the event scheduled for mid-November.

Some of those who have decided to stay away from Web Summit 2023 include Atomico, Sequoia Capital partner Ravi Gupta, Y Combinator CEO Garry Tan, Google, Meta, Amazon, Intel, Stripe, and Siemens, not to mention the heads of dozens of Israeli companies such as AI21 co-founder Ori Goshen, Tome co-founder Keith Peiris, Taboola founder Adam Singolda, and more. Non-tech industry dropouts include actors Gillian Anderson and Joseph Gordon-Levitt.

In a bid to contain the situation, Cosgraves resigned and was replaced by Wikimedia Foundation CEO and chair of the board of the Signal messaging app, Katherine Maher, who committed to distancing the prospects of the event, which attracted 70,000+ people last year, from any further controversy.

Cosgraves was working on the Doha, Qatar edition of Web Summit, scheduled for February 2024. The Qatari administration has been vocal about Israel’s retaliation against Hamas’ infiltration in October.

Nevertheless, the 15th Web Summit promises more extensive networking and investment opportunities for more than 2,600 startups and 71,000+ attendees from 160 countries through its lineup of over 1,000 speakers, policymakers, and 800 investors.

“Where to next?” in technology is what Web Summit 2023 aims to answer.

When and Where Is Web Summit 2023

Web Summit 2023 will be held over four days starting November 13, 2023. It will be held at the Altice Arena in Lisbon, Portugal.

Web Summit 2023 Spotlight

Web Summit 2023 will feature more than two dozen tracks, including those that address changes in the software-as-a-service (SaaS) space, design, cryptocurrency, full-stack, robotics, sustainability, and, of course, the present-day talk of the town, rather the world — artificial intelligence.

And if one-sided sessions aren’t your thing, Roundtables offer attendees a chance for 45-minute discussions with industry leaders, while Masterclasses are avenues for networking and learning new skills.

Special shoutout to ALPHA and BETA, Web Summit 2023’s startup programs for access to guidance, a chance to create brand awareness, and a meeting with potential investors. On the other hand, PITCH is Web Summit 2023’s startup competition for companies that have not raised more than €5 million in funding to date and haven’t changed their business model in the last three years. PITCH is open for startups that have entered the ALPHA and BETA programs.
