Apple Aims to Use Only 100% Recycled Cobalt In Batteries by 2025

The pledge comes amid the tech giant’s efforts towards achieving carbon neutrality by 2030.

  • Apple Inc. has announced that it will use only batteries made from recycled cobalt for its products by 2025 as a part of its initiative to become a carbon-neutral entity by 2030.

Tech companies worldwide are being blamed for the deaths of workers mining cobalt in African sites. In addition, the company is also aiming to use printed circuit boards that will be designed in-house with recycled gold and tin, while the company will manufacture magnets from recycled rare-earth elements.

AppleOpens a new window has been speedily ramping up the use of recycled cobalt – 13% of the cobalt used by the company was from recycled sources in 2021. This number increased to 25% in 2022. The company currently sources nearly all tungsten and approximately 75% of rare earth from recycled sources.

Earlier this month, Apple announced its intention to commit to setting up a $200 million fund for carbon removal projects. The project aims to eliminate 1 million tons of atmospheric carbon dioxide annually while generating monetary returns for investors. The project will include sustainable farming efforts, ecosystem conservation, and restoration.

This effort is also part of the company’s roadmap to achieving carbon neutrality across manufacturing supply chains and product life cycles, with a 75% emission reduction by high-quality carbon removal measures in this decade.
