Meta building
  • Meta platforms, Instagram and Facebook, will soon make it mandatory for all political ad posts using artificial intelligence in content creation to be disclosed as such.
  • The new policy by Meta will see that the use of AI on content will be visible on user screens whenever an ad is clicked on by accounts anywhere in the world.

Facebook and Instagram will now require that accounts disclose the use of artificial intelligence in creating content for political ads on these platforms. According to the new policy, Meta will label such ads, acknowledging the use of AI, which will be visible to users whenever the ads are clicked starting 1st January 2024.

Meta and other tech companies in the U.S. have often been criticized for not taking measures to address the issues arising from artificial intelligence. On the other hand, European legislators have already progressed with significant AI regulations in the works. With the U.S. 2024 elections around the corner, lawmakers are running out of time.

Microsoft has unveiled similar initiatives, including features that allow the watermarking of digital ads that prevent alteration without leaving evidence of tampering. Regulation of AI has become a hot topic in recent months, with advances in the field allowing for realistic image and video creation that could be used to confuse voters on a large scale.

The Federal Election Commission has already initiated proceedings to regulate AI-generated deepfake political ads before 2024. President Biden also signed an executive order to drive the responsible use of AI.

U.S. Senators have also pulled up X and Meta over the potential impact of deepfake content on their platforms. Additional measures will likely emerge over the next few months as preparations for the elections ramp up.
