Types of DaaS New Desktop as a Service SWOT Analysis

Let’s dive into Desktop as a Service (DaaS) SWOT analysis. Desktop as a Service (DaaS) has been a part of the industry for a long time. However, recently, there has been a big change in how DaaS is offered. It’s like a new era for DaaS, now divided into three options.

Let’s check what those 3 offerings are, their differences, and their advantages and disadvantages. We have explained the SWOT (strengths, weaknesses, opportunities, and threats) analysis of DaaS offering. There are 3 different types of offerings in DaaS such as self-assembled, vendor-managed and vendor-assembled.

We will take the examples of different vendors who provide different types of DaaS offerings. DaaS is a cloud computing service that provides virtual desktops to users over the internet.

Users access a virtual desktop hosted on a remote server instead of running an operating system and applications on a local device (like a personal computer or laptop). DaaS is often used by businesses to streamline IT management, enhance security, and provide employees with more flexible work options.

What is DaaS?

DaaS is a Desktop as a Service offering from vendors. This Virtual Desktop or Application offering comes from a public cloud or service provider. Vendors provide fully managed control plane service as part of DaaS offering.

Self Assembled DaaS

This Daas offering is very close to the Traditional on-prem VDI solution. The only difference is that vendors fully manage core infra components and hosting. Other infra components such as server, network, security, and storage configurations are managed by vendors.

  • Customers also have the option to customize some of these server, network, security, and storage configurations.

SWOT Analysis for Self-Assembled DaaS

Let’s look at the SWOT (Strengths, Opportunities, Weaknesses, and Threats) analysis of the self-assembled DaaS solution. In Strength, you have Server and Storage flexibility.

There are a lot of Custom options for infra configurations. It is a very mature market solution. It supports all the traditional VDI or most used scenarios, such as multi-sessions.

  • In the Opportunities, It has several Granular DR/BCP options and Advanced options for master image management. Better Custom Monitoring options are available with self-assembled ones now.
  • Let’s look into Weaknesses; it is complex to implement and maintain operations. It requires all the traditional VDI skills. Some of the vendors provide hybrid options, and it is complex to adopt new features.
  • In Threats, it is complex architecture to main and not fully Cloud native architecture.

NOTE! – All of these points mentioned in the SWOT analysis are not applicable to all the vendors offering Self-Assembled DaaS solutions.

Vendor Assembled Daas

Vendor Assembled means the vendor manages most parts of the solution. The vendor fully manages server, Storage, and Infra configurations. The vendor manages other components like network, security, image management, app management, and user support.

  • Customers also have the option to customize the following components: network, security, image management, app management, and user support.

SWOT Analysis for Vendor-Assembled DaaS

Let’s check the SWOT (strengths, opportunities, weaknesses and threats) analysis of vendor-assembled DaaS solutions. In Strengths, a decrease in operational complexity is one of the important considerations. Requires fewer skills to manage and maintain the solution from a customer side. They are tightly aligned with other modern solutions.

Most of the innovations happen in vendor-assembled and Vendor Assembled offerings, at least from a Microsoft side. That is going to provide a better employee experience. You could use 3rd party tools for cost/license optimization. If you are using a vendor-assembled DaaS solution, this will help you adopt two innovations and changes easily.

  • Let’s look at weaknesses and limited VM Templates/Specs available with this solution. It is not possible to host VDIs On-Prem. This is another weakness, and the cost is fixed.
  • The threads for vendor-assembled DaaS solutions DR/BCP Options are limited. It is not a fully matured market. It is a personal desktop scenario in most cases.

NOTE! – All of these points mentioned in the SWOT analysis are not applicable to all the vendors offering Vendor Assembled DaaS solutions.

Vendor Managed DaaS

Vendor Managed means vendor full service is managed and supported by the vendor. The vendor fully manages server, Storage, Infra configurations, network, security, and image management. The vendor manages other components, such as app management and user support.

  • Customers also have the option to customize the following components: app management and user support.

Gartner’s Study

Let’s look at Gartner’s view of the DaaS market. By 2026, 80% of DaaS sales will be vendor-assembled or vendor-managed solutions, compared with less than 20% in 2023.

Gartner says most organizations will move away from self-assembled solutions like AVD, Citrix, and Cloud. So, the vendor-managed solutions were less in use when the vendor assembled, only 20% in 2023.

  • Most of the vendors will concentrate on vendor-assembled or vendor-managed solutions.
  • Microsoft has a lot of advantages because it already has a matured solution in the vendor-assembled Dash category called Windows 365.
