ChatGPT-Based App Approved by Apple Amid Content Concerns

Apple raised concerns about content moderation parameters for BlueMail users.

Last Updated: March 7, 2023

Apple has approved a ChatGPT-powered app BlueMail, after concerns by the tech giant regarding the tool’s content moderation parameters following assurances from the app developers.

The BlueMail app has been under Apple’s scrutiny over concerns that the AI-based language features could potentially create content that is not appropriate for children. Currently, the app is available for users of ages four or more.

Apple reviews and curates each app before approving its placement in the Apple App Store. However, the tech giant has frequently displayed concerns regarding using ChatGPT. The AI platform has been under the scrutiny of researchers in terms of ethics since its content can be difficult to differentiate from human-generated content.

BlueMail Developer and Apple Disagree on Restrictions

Apple had blocked an update to the BlueMail app, which aimed to add the ChatGPT bit to the software. Ben Volach, cofounder of BlueMail developer Blix Inc. had argued that its app already included content filtering features and that other apps on the App Store with similar AI capabilities did not have such age restrictions.

He also said making changes to the age restrictions for users only of 17 years and above, as asked by Apple, would be unfair, as these policies made it hard to bring out innovations to users.

In a recent update, Volach informed Apple that the update includes content moderation. He also suggested that new policies about ChatGPT and other AI systems by the tech giant should be made public.

Bing, by Microsoft, released an update for its app for the Android and Apple App Stores. This ChatGPT-powered app is set to an age restriction of 17 years and older, as it can seek adult content through the search engine.
