  • Apple is expected to invest $1 billion to develop generative artificial intelligence capabilities across its product line.
  • The company has been lagging behind competitors such as Microsoft and Google for the past year and has been forced to play catch-up.

Apple is set to invest $1 billion annually to effectively integrate generative AI capabilities into its entire product line to catch up with competitors like Microsoft and Google. The company has lagged behind most competitors since Microsoft-backed ChatGPT was released last year.

The ensuing interest in generative AI offerings by other major tech companies caught Apple off-guard. CEO Tim Cook has stated that Apple has been working on its own generative AI technology for years but has not yet caught up with the surge in advancements in the field in recent months.

Apple has built its own large language model, dubbed Ajax. It has also developed an internal chatbot called AppleGPT to test the LLM. Apple’s AI and software engineering team is aiming to make use of its development in generative AI and integrate it into Siri, Apple’s digital assistant, Messages, and Apple Music.

The upgraded version of Siri is expected to be ready by 2024. The team is also working on integrating AI into iOS to improve auto-suggestion and intelligent response features. Such developments will aid Apple in gaining better influence in the field, as it has been excluded from key AI forums and government initiatives in the AI sector so far, including the Senate’s bipartisan AI Insight Forum and a White House meeting as a part of the Biden administration’s efforts to develop generative AI responsibly.

While Apple currently uses AI in some of its products, it has been limited to text auto-correction and image editing. This is expected to change with the investments in the sector headed by Craig Federighi, SVP of software engineering; John Giannandrea, SVP of machine learning and AI strategy; and Eddy Cue, head of services.
