Apple in Discussions With Google To Integrate Gemini AI Into iPhones

- Apple is reportedly negotiating a deal with Google to integrate its Gemini generative AI technology into iOS platforms.
- Apple CEO Tim Cook has stated that several AI features are expected to be released to consumers by the end of 2024, with generative AI offerings being integrated into iOS 18.
Apple is in talks with Google to integrate its Gemini artificial intelligence engine into iPhones. Reportedly, the tech giants are actively negotiating a licensing agreement to power features that are set to be available on future iOS versions. The negotiations come on the heels of similar talks between Apple, Microsoft, and OpenAI.
Apple is expected to release iOS 18 for iPhones later this year, which is expected to include several AI features, including an upgraded version of Siri. While Apple is working on its own AI platform and tools, integrating Gemini will allow for significant improvements to its current products while bridging the gap with other key AI players.
At the same time, Apple has released some details about the development of its new MM1 AI model. The company intends to use a wide-ranging dataset in the development process, including images, documents, and text. Such a training methodology is hoped to enable better pretraining metrics and adequate results for a competitive AI marketplace.

Apple and Google have already cooperated in the past, with Google being the default search engine for Apple devices despite this agreement being scrutinized by antitrust regulators. Potentially, the Gemini deal will benefit Google in its competition against AI players like Meta, OpenAI, and Microsoft. However, a deal over AI technologies is also expected to draw the attention of regulators.
Google’s AI technologies are already being used by Samsung for their flagship smartphone offerings and in Google’s own pixel devices. The deal is consequently expected to significantly boost the reach of Google’s AI products to consumers across the globe. Google and Alphabet’s share prices rose following the news.
