  • Several Meta and Apple services were impacted by a worldwide outage for hours on Wednesday.
  • Services such as WhatsApp, Facebook, Instagram, Apple App Store, Apple Music, and Apple TV were shut down, with thousands of user reports about the incident.

Users of multiple Apple and Meta services, including music, TV, messaging, and social media platforms, experienced outages for hours on Wednesday. Outages for the platforms for both companies occurred approximately at the same time, between 2 pm and 8 pm ET. However, the exact cause for either outage has yet to be made clear.

Apple stated that several of its online services, including music streaming, TV platforms, and app store, had faced outages worldwide. Some of its other applications that were disrupted include Audiobooks, Arcade, Fitness Plus, Books, and the Apple Sports app. Apple announced the resolution of the disruption within an hour of the disruption.

This is not the first time Apple has suffered such issues; a similar problem was noted in 2022, and considering that 19% of the company’s revenue comes from these services, controlling such disruptions is important to the tech giant.

Meta, Too, Faces Service Outages

Meta platforms such as Instagram, WhatsApp, and Facebook also went down briefly, with thousands of users from the U.K., U.S., Brazil, and India reporting the issue and taking to other social media platforms to air their grievances. The problem was largely resolved a few hours later. Together, these platforms account for over 3 billion daily active users and are the backbone of Meta’s operations.

Meta platforms, including Threads, Facebook, Instagram, and Messenger, faced outages just a few weeks ago due to configuration issues. These incidents highlight the need for tech companies to take measures to minimize the downtime of their services, considering the needs of their user base.
