I had an epiphany today about a major reason open source is disrupting enterprise software. In the open source model, the code is, well.open source. Cool, talented open source developers don't generally want to work for big, stoggie software vendors. Furthermore, customers bought into open source to avoid vendor lock in, so buying for the customers is not all that attractive either. Enterprise Architecture

Having an open-source IVI operating system would create a reusable platform consisting of core services, middleware and open application layer interfaces that eliminate the redundant efforts to create separate proprietary systems. By developing an open-source platform, carmakers can share upgrades as they arrive. BMW has announced plans for IVI based on the open-source platform, and Ford has developed SmartDeviceLink.

Hortonworks is a rock when it comes to its promise to offer a 100% open source distribution. All of the technology built into HDP is an Apache open source project. Hortonworks is also an important member of the Open Data Platform initiative (ODPi) formed earlier this year with IBM, Pivotal Software, and 12 other technology vendors, because the group has adopted Hortonworks-initiated projects such as Apache Ambari. Most of these firms seem to be on one of two paths: Success, which will mean being acquired by Facebook, Apple, Microsoft or IBM, or failure, which will see them acquired by the same firms for their talent. Absolutely, because today’s blockchain is opening up a path towards the delivery of trusted online services. This end-to-end visibility, also known as shared ledgering, can also be linked to business rules and business logic that can drive and enforce trust, openness and integrity across that business network. LinuxKit was first announced and open sourced in April 2017 at DockerCon in Austin. Improved platform support (Azure, packet.net, IBM Bluemix, AWS, GCP, VMware, Hyper-V, etc.). The demo shows using LinuxKit to build an identical image across three different architectures (x86, ARM64, and Raspberry Pi). Neugebauer continues to show how multi-architecture LinuxKit builds are handled using docker build , manifest-tool (with a shout-out to Phil Estes), and notary.

My basic argument is OpenStack is doing for VMware what open source is designed to do at its core; which is to give contributors and users a jump start on the product and services based on the core distribution. While players like IBM may or may not use the code to provide a Cloud service but will take every consulting opportunity as a result of the project. Why not an open project such as OpenStack?
