Countdown to Cloud Excellence: A Glimpse Into Google Cloud Next 2023

Google Cloud Next 2023 is also the first one since Google’s cloud division became profitable in Q1 2023.

Google Cloud Next 2023 highlights
  • Google Cloud Next 2023 will be held from Tuesday, August 29, 2023, to Thursday, August 31.
  • The three-day cloud conference will take place at the Moscone Center in San Francisco, California.

Google Cloud Next 2023 is back this year as an in-person event after being held virtually in the last few years. Google partners, customers, IT decision-makers, and developers are expected to throng San Francisco in the last week of August to check out the latest in Google Cloud Platform and the company’s progress in several key initiatives it has taken up in the past year.

Google Cloud Next 2023 is also the first edition of the conference that will be held since Google’s cloud division became profitable in Q1 2023. In H1 2023, Google Cloud revenue jumped 28% to $15.48 billion ($12.097 billion in H1 2022). Simultaneously, Google registered an operating income of $586 million, a turnaround of $2.011 billion compared to losses of $1.425 billion in H1 2022.

Google Cloud is still the third largest cloud vendor in the world, with a 9% market share as of Q3 2023, according to Canalys. With a smaller market share compared to Amazon Web Services (AWS; 30% share and 12% growth in Q2 2023) and Microsoft Azure (26% share and 26% growth in Q2 2023), Google Cloud’s 31% growth rate in Q2 2023 means the law of large numbers hasn’t caught up to the company yet.

Google Cloud Next represents the search giant’s efforts to keep up with its winning ways pertaining to cloud computing. Google Cloud Next 2023 Marquee sponsor Tata Consultancy Services expects 15,000 in-person attendees, significantly lower than the 30,000+ that attended the event’s previous in-person version (2019).

Let’s see what Google Cloud Next 2023 has in store.

Product announcements

Google’s generative AI push is healthily complementing its public cloud infrastructure business. In its Q2 2023 earnings call, Google noted that 70% of generative AI unicorns rely on Google Cloud.

“Our new generative AI offerings are expanding our total addressable market and winning new customers,” Google CEO Sundar Pichai said. “We are seeing strong demand for the more than 80 models — including third-party and popular open source — in our Vertex, Search, and Conversational AI platforms, with the number of customers growing more than 15X from April to June.”

Google hopes to upsell to its existing Workspace (Gmail, Google Docs, Sheets, Slides, and more) customer base of nine million and add more through AI integration. The search giant is also expanding the partner ecosystem through generative AI.

“Google Cloud’s partner ecosystem continues to provide support in the development of its generative AI applications. Hundreds of ISVs and SaaS providers, including Box, Salesforce, and Snorkel, along with GSIs, have committed to training over 150,000 individuals on Google Cloud’s Generative AI,” Canalys noted in its report released earlier this month.

“Google Cloud claims to command the allegiance of over 70% of burgeoning tech startups that specialize in generative AI. This roster features standout names such as Cohere, Jasper, and Typeface, exemplifying the trust startups place in Google Cloud’s AI capabilities.”

Subsequently, Google can be expected to introduce multiple new products and roll out features in existing products. This includes the Workspace collaboration suite, AI, Google Cloud Platform, and more.
