TruthGPT and ChatGPT Apps on Phone Display
  • Elon Musk has been calling for regulation of artificial intelligence, stating that it is more dangerous than rockets or cars.
  • He has been critical of OpenAI, the organization behind ChatGPT, calling it a ‘for-profit organization’ allied with Microsoft.

Entering the competitive race of AI, Elon Musk has announced his intention to launch his own AI platform, TruthGPT, to challenge prevalent AI tools, including Google’s Bard and Microsoft-backed ChatGPT. He has been particularly critical of ChatGPT, stating that OpenAI is training its chatbot to lie. He also accused Google of not taking security issues associated with AI seriously.

Musk stated that TruthGPT will be a ‘maximum truth-seeking AI’ that would want to understand humanity, making it less likely to destroy it. He also voiced concerns about ChatGPT being pushed to be politically correct rather than factually accurate.

In March, Musk registered a new firm, X.AI Corp. in Nevada to work on the new AI platform. The push for TruthGPT has come after artificial intelligence experts and industry leaders called for a hiatus on developing systems with superior capabilities to OpenAI’s GPT-4, raising concerns over potential threats to society.

Musk was one of the co-founders of OpenAI in 2015. However, he stepped away from the company in 2018, purportedly to focus on SpaceX and Tesla. Further, in January 2023, Microsoft announced an additional multi-billion dollar investment in OpenAI, driving competition in the AI race with Google. The development of TruthGPT will only serve to intensify competition.

Musk Threatens to Sue Microsoft Over Twitter Data Use

Musk has also threatened a lawsuit against Microsoft after the software giant announced its intention to drop Twitter from its advertising platform in the coming week. The move came after Twitter announced a minimum fee of $42,000 per month for its API users.

According to Microsoft, users of Smart Campaigns will not be able to access Twitter through its social media tool from the 25th of April. However, other channels such as LinkedIn, Facebook, and Instagram will remain available.

Elon Musk has threatened to sue Microsoft, referring to the licensing agreement between Microsoft and OpenAI, regarding data used for training AI models. He accused the company of illegally training AI models with Twitter data.

The situation arises at a poor time for Musk and Twitter as the company has been looking to attract advertisers. The firm has already lost over half of the top-paying advertisers since his takeover in October 2022. The high cost of using Twitter’s API has also raised concerns about killing traffic from external sources.
