Using ChatGPT: Where to Get Started

ChatGPT is an AI-powered tool capable of carrying out human-like conversations.

  • ChatGPT is rewiring the internet with its AI-generated content.
  • This article is a step-by-step guide to using ChatGPT.

OpenAI’s dialogue-centric AI chatbot is pushing the AI envelope. Firstly, it’s important to know whether ChatGPT is free to use. The answer to this is yes. ChatGPT’s basic version is free to use. This also implies that OpenAI is spending heavily to keep the chatbot running for its global user base. As per recent estimates, OpenAI spends around $3 million per month to keep ChatGPT’s first version live.

In February 2023, OpenAI announced the launch of a premium version of its language model, ChatGPT Plus. According to the press release, the bot’s subscription plan will cost around $20 per month. ChatGPT Plus is currently available to customers around the world. The paid version is expected to speed up responses, provide seamless access during busy hours, and also provide first access to the newest features on the bot.

Is It Essential to Download ChatGPT?

Today, ChatGPT is accessible via its website. So it doesn’t need to be downloaded. Although OpenAI is yet to release an app for it, there are a few ways to install ChatGPT.

  1. In the first method, when you visit ChatGPT’s official website, you can save it as a Windows app through the Edge browser. The steps include,
  • Step 1: Visit the chatbot’s site
  • Step 2: Select the ellipsis menu
  • Step 3: Hover over ‘Apps’
  • Step 4: Select ‘Install this site as an app.’

The above process loads ChatGPT on your machine.

2. Another way of installing ChatGPT includes exploiting tools like MacGPT, which enable shortcuts on your system to access browser service directly. OpenAI recently launched ChatGPT API, which allows the bot’s integration with other tools and systems. For instance, in February 2023, Snapchat announced the launch of the chatbot ‘My AI’ for its app, which integrates with the customized version of ChatGPT. Also, on March 7, 2023, Salesforce launched the ChatGPT app for the Slack messaging platform.

How to Register an OpenAI Account?

Users can use ChatGPT just by typing-in texts and receiving responses for it. Although ChatGPT is quite simple to use, users must have an account or create one before using any of its functionalities. Thus, if you do not have an account, you must register to start your ChatGPT journey. People with a Google or Microsoft account can choose an easy login option and start using the chatbot.

If you have any other specific email, you must enter it manually. Next, you need to add your contact number to register. It must be noted that ChatGPT does not accept virtual phone numbers. Upon entering the number, you will get the confirmation code on your phone, which you can enter on the registration page. This completes the setup process.

Later, you will be guided through some ChatGPT rules that may include OpenAI’s privacy policies, what can be regarded as errors in data, and how users can provide feedback. Upon reading the information, you are navigated to ChatGPT’s homepage. You can thereby assume that you have registered successfully.

How to Use ChatGPT?

The ChatGPT webpage has a text box at the bottom where users can type their queries. The webpage also has an area where results get populated. According to OpenAI, ChatGPT gives better results when users input statements rather than questions. For example, queries like “explain the origin of our universe” would provide a more detailed answer than “how did our universe come into existence?”

ChatGPT also allows you to input specific requests where you can include the specific number of paragraphs you expect in response. For instance, “explain the theory of relativity in five paragraphs.”

In situations where the chatbot has access to all the information, the generator, in most cases, will deliver accurate results. Otherwise, the natural language model may fill up gaps with incorrect data. Although such instances are rare, it is worth noting that ChatGPT currently has information on world events until 2021. It has no knowledge of global events that have occurred after 2021.

Nevertheless, ChatGPT allows users to input queries until the browser is closed or the thread is reset to clear their previous inputs. Additionally, users also have the option of using ChatGPT in dark or light mode.

Takeaway

As we await the rollout of ChatGPT-4, the biggest development will be the chatbot’s ability to integrate with other applications. While the future seems bright for ChatGPT, people unfamiliar with the AI-based language model can follow the steps discussed in the article and start using ChatGPT.
