Continuing on with this tasty subject I mentioned last time that as machines run on electricity they don't need to taste things. Something struck my brain cells after that and I remembered. We also run on electricity. Our thoughts, our nervous signals and a whole lot of other stuff runs on electrochemical interactions.

When I was in school I was taught about the five senses, taste, touch, smell, sight and hearing. Later on, I learned that we actually have more than just those five senses and while I don't know exactly how much (I did read about it but I'm old and forget what I have for breakfast anyway), it is a fair number. We need those senses to make (heh) sense of the world we live in.

Previously I prattled on about my age and reduction in senses and how technology now has a better sense of smell than I have. This technological sense of smell is used in our very homes, more specifically in our kitchens. They are the gas detectors which detect gas leaks which could be potentially life-threatening.

The net of it was that it demanded a much larger contribution of words than I normally write. In my previous ranting, I implied that robots, or active technology should I say, currently has no sense of touch. That is not exactly true. Even industrial robots like the famed Kuka brand have the ability to feel things. As far as I know, this ability is inherent in the design of any robot. How this works is quite simply via feedback.

Sorry, I couldn't help myself with the title. I must be in a punny mood today. We are all born with ears and most of the time they work. Actually, they always work in that they direct sound to our sensory inputs which convert pressure waves to electrical signals. Sometimes those sensory inputs don't work and also tend to degrade with time.
