1 Million Consumers Hit By Zoll Medical Data Breach

Zoll officials have stated that there has been no indication of misuse of the leaked data.

Zoll Medical Corp., the medical device and software manufacturer, has disclosed a data breach with a suspected leak of records belonging to approximately 1 million Zoll employees and consumers.

Zoll made a filingOpens a new window with the Office of the Maine Attorney General on the 10th of March, which stated the detection of the breach on the 28th of January. The company has informed law enforcement and has consulted with third-party cybersecurity experts. However, the company unexpectedly did not cut access to the impacted data till the 2nd of February.

Jocelyn Houle, senior director of data governance at Securiti Inc., spoke about the breach concerning handling protected health information (PHI). “Understanding and tracking the PHI data one holds is a priority for all healthcare organizations. With the advancements in AI and machine learning techniques, organizations can now leverage automation to accurately discover PHI data at scale no matter where it’s stored. From a security standpoint, organizations must mitigate misconfiguration risks and enforce least privilege access to avoid unintended data exposures. Techniques such as data masking can enable key business users to leverage patient data while minimizing the damage caused by a security breach.”

Theft Involves Zoll Consumer Details, Including SSNs

According to the filing, the breach is expected to have exposed details such as names, addresses, social security numbers and birthdays, in addition to information on whether people were considering the purchase of Zoll products.

As a subsidiary of Asahi Kasei Group Co., the company is primarily involved in emergency care products for functions such as ventilation, cardiac monitoring, and oxygen therapy, among others.
