General Motors Introduces ChatGPT to Power Automotive Voice Assistants
The automotive manufacturer aims to use Open AI’s offering to develop automotive virtual assistants.
Automotive giant General Motors Co. is set to introduce ChatGPT to the virtual assistants in its vehicle portfolio. The move is a part of the company’s ongoing collaboration with Microsoft. The development of the new virtual assistants is said to be through the use of ChatGPT APIs with Microsoft’s cloud service Azure.
Earlier in 2023, Microsoft announced significant investments into Open AI, aiming to include chatbot tech throughout its portfolio. General Motors has a long-term collaboration with Microsoft, starting with the company’s Cruise subsidiary of self-driving vehicles in 2021. The objective is to combine hardware and software expertise, including manufacturing and cloud computing, to develop transportation ecosystems.

AI Applications Widen Scope of Virtual Assistants
The AI-based chatbot could potentially access data such as user schedules, codes for automated garage doors, and information on vehicle features. According to GM, the chatbot will also be able to provide drivers with guidance about troubleshooting for diagnostic lights on dashboards and simplified demonstrations through infotainment systems.
The chatbot, however, is not likely to act in the same way as Bing or ChatGPT, as GM plans to add a vehicle-specific layer to the ChatGPT tech, adding additional layers of customization for automotive operations. The new features are likely to be available in vehicles such as Buick, Chevrolet, GMC, and Cadillacs, which are manufactured by GM.
