Cloud backup: Don't rely on your provider alone

David Linthicum

You've moved data to the cloud. Now it's time to talk about disaster recovery -- how to build a resilient system that can recover from catastrophic failure. Amazon Web Services, for example, says its S3 service "is designed to deliver flexibility, agility, geo-redundancy, and robust data protection." To IT, that means the system is fault-tolerant, managing the resiliency needs for you. ("Geo-redundancy"

Enterprises can't solve tech support for the cloud

David Linthicum

Your storage-as-a-service cloud goes down one afternoon. Who do your users call? The internal support desk? The cloud provider? Outsourced support? Their nerdy cousin? These are the questions facing enterprise IT these days. They are brokering cloud services for users, often passing the cost on to them as well. However, when it comes to support, the cloud is still a hot potato. Enterprises are struggling to create support strategies that make sense for the cloud.

The Six Principles of Persuasion

Speaker: Michael Carducci, CTO, Mago:Tech

As senior tech leaders, we often fall prey to thinking that a “good idea” and logical case is sufficient to get the desired response and result. We might be trying to get our CEO on-board with investment in a new technology or a rearchitecture effort, or we might want culture or process changes by our team. Our “good idea” is simply the beginning. An idea must be communicated; a case must be made; and ultimately other people must be persuaded to get onboard. Michael Carducci brings a fascinating background to this webinar. He’s a technologist and regularly works to help senior leaders improve their results. He’s also a professional mentalist and has been a student of psychology, human behavior and the principles of influence for nearly two decades.

Using PowerShell to retrieve the Bitlocker Recovery Key from Active Directory

Mick's IT Blog

I wanted an easy way to find the bitlocker recovery key in the even MBAM was down and as a backup. We use MBAM, but also use Active Directory as a backup for the keys. This script makes it easy to find the key without having to go into AD. I tested this script on user profiles both with and without permissions to the bitlocker recovery keys. If a user does not have permissions to view the key, then the script returns the message no key exists. This script will prompt for the computer name.

Manage Those Keys

An unavoidable fact of life is that data breaches can and will occur. The jury is still out on when and to what extent we will be able to reverse this situation. However, in the meantime, to avoid appearing on the “wall of shame” of major breaches that expose confidential information, you had better make sure that all the data you use, store and transmit, is encrypted.
