SEC opens the gates to crowdfunding and a new structure of capitalism

Trends in the Living Networks

This is significant. While talk doesn’t necessarily lead to action, a significant shift in capitalism could be coming. On Wednesday US SEC Chairman Mary Shapiro sent a letter to Rep. Darrell Issa, chair of the House Oversight Committee. The letter is embedded at the bottom of this post. Many have focused on the potential from the current SEC review to relax limits on shareholders for private companies, notably the rule that if a private company has 500 investors or more it has to disclose

Devote more time to your kid’s strengths than their shortcomings

I'm not lost, I'm wondering

Consider this opening paragraph from the book Strengths Finder 2.0 : At its fundamentally flawed core, the aim of almost any learning program is to help us become who we are not. If you don’t have natural talent with numbers, you’re still forced to spend time in that area to attain a degree. If you’re not very empathic, you get sent to a course designed to infuse empathy into your personality.

Peak Performance: Continuous Testing & Evaluation of LLM-Based Applications

Speaker: Aarushi Kansal, AI Leader & Author and Tony Karrer, Founder & CTO at Aggregage

Software leaders who are building applications based on Large Language Models (LLMs) often find it a challenge to achieve reliability. It’s no surprise given the non-deterministic nature of LLMs. To effectively create reliable LLM-based (often with RAG) applications, extensive testing and evaluation processes are crucial. This often ends up involving meticulous adjustments to prompts.

Don’t ask me, ask him (about the autism C-word)

I'm not lost, I'm wondering

A few years ago, a friend asked me the question: “If someone told you there was a pill you could give your son that would cure his autism overnight, would you give it to him?&# Sounds like an easy question, right? I hadn’t really thought much about it for some time, as it had been nearly ten years since his autism diagnosis, so I answered with a very non-committal, “I don’t know, I guess so.&# That evening I gave the question some more serious thought, and was surprised b

Is there autism in heaven?

I'm not lost, I'm wondering

If there is indeed a heaven, and your autistic child goes there when he dies, will he still be autistic? Over the years I’ve come to believe that asking someone this question about autism in heaven is one of the best ways to understand how they view autism. Even better than asking them whether they believe that autism needs to be cured, though of course there is probably some correlation between a person’s answers to these two questions.

Insights into the next phase of crowdfunding: tearing down legal constraints and building reputation systems

Trends in the Living Networks

The post I wrote on the weekend, SEC opens the gates to crowdfunding and a new structure of capitalism , was on Techmeme for over 24 hours and was ranked by Topsy as one of the 100 most tweeted links , so this seems to be a topic of general interest. One of the best things about doing blog posts is that you uncover interesting perspectives, especially through comments and reactions to the post , and thoughts provoked by those.

Autistic kids – and their parents – deserve to have fun, too

I'm not lost, I'm wondering

Many parents of children diagnosed as autistic spend a large majority – sometimes all – of their “free&# time trying to make their child “more normal&# or “less autistic&# , and not enough time on letting their child just be a kid. This is also true – maybe more so – at school, where the focus is often a single-minded (dare I say, “autistic&# ) dedication to implementing an IEP.

Normal people aren’t normal either

I'm not lost, I'm wondering

Set in the near future (30 years or so), Elizabeth Moon ‘s novel The Speed of Dark is the story of Lou Arrendale, an autistic man presented with the possibility of being cured, his contemplation of what his decision – either way – would mean, and the consequences of his eventual decision. As you might imagine, Lou gave quite a bit of consideration to what it means to be normal.
