Ranking and comparing the world’s top 20 startup hubs

Trends in the Living Networks

Earlier this year I wrote about the top 25 startup hubs in the world as ranked by the Startup Genome project. As I noted at the time, it was based on skewed data from the sample used, but was probably the best available. The project has now released updated and more detailed data ranking the top global startup ecosystems on a wide range of criteria.

Using EncFS with Dropbox and BoxCryptor

Scott Lowe

'Lots of folks like using Dropbox , the ubiquitous store-and-sync cloud storage service; I am among them. However, concerns over the privacy and security of my data have kept me from using Dropbox for some projects. To help address that, I looked around to find an open, interoperable way of adding an extra layer of encryption onto my data. What I found is described in this post, and it involves using the open source EncFS and OSXFUSE projects along with an application from BoxCryptor to provide

Peak Performance: Continuous Testing & Evaluation of LLM-Based Applications

Speaker: Aarushi Kansal, AI Leader & Author and Tony Karrer, Founder & CTO at Aggregage

Software leaders who are building applications based on Large Language Models (LLMs) often find it a challenge to achieve reliability. It’s no surprise given the non-deterministic nature of LLMs. To effectively create reliable LLM-based (often with RAG) applications, extensive testing and evaluation processes are crucial. This often ends up involving meticulous adjustments to prompts.

Staying Above the Fray

A CIO's Voice

'The other day I was talking to someone outside my line about an IT issue and how best to address. During the course of the conversation the topic turned from business to gossip and then into an attack on a person’s character. CIOs are privy to a lot of information that we come across during our everyday processes and during executive meetings. That is just the nature of the beast and part of carrying the chief in your title.

The global brain is like a child’s brain – let’s nurture it

Trends in the Living Networks

In my book Living Networks I wrote about how the networks in which we live are coming to life, making us all part of what we can quite accurately think of as a global brain. I wrote an extended introduction to the book that went into this concept in depth. However this was not included in the final published book, so I later shared it as an article, Autopoiesis and how hyper-connectivity is literally bringing the networks to life.

Conversationally, it is used as tantamount to luck, providence or chance. Innovation is the light every business pursues now, however, very few organizations have a full set of innovation capabilities, The variety of the innovation research has consistently shown that there is no long-term correlation between the amount

Design to elucidate complexity: derivatives and the meta-economy

Trends in the Living Networks

I just came across the excellent visual presentation at the bottom of this post by information designer Gong Szeto on Design as Derivative: Weapons of Mass Disruption. Source : Gong Szeto. Financial derivatives are collectively one of the most complex human-created domains, which systemically can have a massive impact in the real world. While I’d quibble with some of the points and representations that Szeto makes in his slides, overall it is great illustration of what I call “concep

Board Room Debate: Governance vs. Risk Management -Hand in Glove?

Future of CIO

From the root of the word - Governance means to steer. A cliché definition of governance is the manner in which an organization is directed and controlled. Governance and Risk Management do indeed overlap and are both important to achieving the To-Be state. While the board is the custodian for both, you cannot exercise the same control with risk management as with governance, and good governance does control the practice of good risk management, but not the other way around.
