Running High Mature Organization with Digital Confluence

Running a digital organization is to connect the old and new, mix the solid and fluid to enforce digital confluence.

The digital era is volatile, complex, uncertain and ambiguous; it represents a break from the past, with a high level of impact and complexity. The digital organization is hyperconnected with blurred functional border, organizational border, industry vertical border, geographic border, and knowledge domain border. To get into the deep, deep digital reality, businesses management today must make an objective assessment of the level of organizational performance and maturity by asking: Are the business assumptions and risks understood and manageable? Are you achieving the desired outcomes? Can you run a high mature organization with digital confluences to be ready for the future?

Information confluence: In this information-abundant digital era, there isn't really much of an organization without the massive oceans of information that flow through the enterprise at any given split second. The growth of information is exponential; information flows into the company, and flows out of it; it erodes, and it gets created again; hopefully, it flows to the customers in terms of product and service delivery, and it flows within the digital ecosystem, just like many rivers merged to the sea. Because the value of information is not isolated, siloed data, inconsistent or broken business processes often result in significant data inconsistencies. Information confluence means breaking down functional silos or geographical borders to streamline information flow, to make sure information integrity and consistency. Just-in-time information management is crucial for running a real-time digital organization to make sure that the right information is in the right place at the right time and shared to the right persons for making right decisions to solve right problems. It’s about figuring out an enterprise-level information management solution that cleans and merge data from multiple sources, securely share information across functions, and refine it into business insight. Streamlining and standardizing data management processes is an essential prerequisite to providing effective integration solutions and achieving data synchronization. The power of information is to empower the business with real-time insight across the organization in ways never possible before.

Innovation confluence: Innovation is about how to transform novel ideas to achieve business values. Digital is the age of innovation. Digital innovation has all sorts of flavors and broader spectrum. Effective innovation management requires a suitable process as part of the holistic 'system,' to ensure innovation confluence and management cohesiveness. It’s about establishing an innovation framework, taking structural processes and leveraging the practical tools to design, produce, or improve products, services, processes, or business models that deliver new value to customers or satisfy employees. It’s the leadership responsibility to set innovation goals, define innovation models, and clarify roles and responsibilities for people involved in innovation processes and in connection with the processes and model, connect key assets and resources in their context and vicinity digitally to the resource-rich innovation clusters across the hyperconnected business ecosystem to enable idea flow and create synergy. These innovation clusters are the digital multiplier to improve innovation confluence, scale up innovation practices, and amplify innovation effect.

Collaboration confluence: Thanks for the emerging digital technologies and collaboration tools, the era of face-to-face, hierarchical management, and top-down communication, with side effects such as silos, autocratic management, culture inertia, good old bureaucracy, etc, is beginning to change. Modern digital technologies have made mass collaboration increasingly easy and seamless. In fact, collaboration through the digital platform is already driving changes to enterprise systems and expose them to societal changes as well. The digital workforce today is hyper-connected and diverse in many ways, to share a natural affinity for new perspectives, fresh ideas, and collective insight. Running a high mature digital organization is about harnessing cross-functional communication and real-time collaboration to create multiple pathways for digital flow. The organizational design which includes policy and methodology must be adaptable, take advantage of the latest digital technology platforms & tools, and provide the space for people to collaborate and build their professional competency. Collaboration is good, but it’s not an end in itself. The end is business harmony.

Running a digital organization is to connect the old and new, mix the solid and fluid to enforce digital confluence, take a structural approach to dynamically transform a mixture of systemic intensity related capabilities, deal with management paradoxes & challenges, and deliver quantitative & qualitative business results continually.
