The cloud rains on VMware's parade

David Linthicum

We’ve seen the recent headlines regarding job cuts at VMware. It’s not only VMware. All technology companies that rely on revenue from traditional data center, as VMware does, are failing to see the growth they used to. [ See what hardware, software, development tools, and cloud services came out on top in the InfoWorld 2016 Technology of the Year Awards. |

EMC and VMware are disrupting Server SAN

Virtualized Greek

The Server SAN market is pretty new but VMware and EMC have already started disrupting the market. Both VMware and EMC have entered the competition of hyper-converged infrastructures or more specifically the Server SAN market with purely software plays. VMware enters the Hyper-Converged market

Virtualized Greek

One of the major announcements from VMworld 2014 is that VMware has fully entered the hyper-converged market. VMware and their OEM hardware partners have decided not to leave the high margins of hyper-converged to the handful of appliance vendors on.

OpenStack powered by VMware

Virtualized Greek

The more I think about it the strategy of VMware joining OpenStack is starting to make more and more sense. Similar I don’t believe VMware and OpenStack compete at even the datacenter layer or Cloud layer for that matter. Instead of challenging OpenStack VMware embraced it.

Why HP and Cisco passed on VMware EVO

I’m talking VMware’s EVO platform and the missing partnership between Cisco and HP. PC & Server Hardware EVO I’ve been accused of being a conspiracy theorist, and I’m sure this post won’t do anything to dispel that perception.

VMware Developers, Rejoice!

Chuck's Blog - EMC

It’s becoming a given: IT infrastructure is morphing from hardware to software — everything becomes code, everything becomes programmable and orchestrateable.   At VMware, we call that set of concepts SDDC — the software-defined data center. VMware Developer Center.

Hardware In An Era Of Software-Defined Storage

Chuck's Blog - EMC

While many of us are enamored by the vision of a software-defined data center (SDDC), we also know that hardware will still be a very important consideration: how much, how efficient, how fast, etc. Hardware Matters. I can think of a few by myself :)  Software Shapes Hardware.

The VMware View Of Software Defined Storage

Chuck's Blog - EMC

VMworld is upon us, and -- amidst all the noise and chatter -- VMware is quietly laying out the first chapter in how it views software-defined storage.  IT infrastructure professionals, please take note: VMware has big ideas on how the storage ecosystem should evolve.

Forget the FUD: VMware NSX and Cisco ACI SDN solutions

Virtualized Greek

There has been a good deal of FUD spread since VMware has announced their NSX network hypervisor based on software from their $1 billion Nicira acquisition. VMware is a large corporation but, $1 billion is a lot of money to any company and a big bet on network virtualization.

Why You Should Consider VMware As A Serious (Future) Storage Vendor

Chuck's Blog - EMC

While the exact path might be unclear, the endpoint isn''t: it''s a world where network and storage functionality is preferred to be expressed as software stacks, running on virtualized server hardware. Today, VMware wouldn''t show up on any list of top storage vendors.

Cisco and VMware make Billion Dollar bets on SDN

Both Cisco and VMware have bet big on SDN as the future of the multi-billion dollar network industry. VMware bet big on the purchase of Nicira and released their NSX product network virtualization solution as a way forward away from hardware first solutions such as typical Cisco product.

Is VMware helping to Widen the Digital Divide?

Virtualized Greek

VMware is leading the way with some of the most advanced virtualization management software on the market. VMware is also leading the charge into managing the data center via their software based products. VMware has become the defacto standard for x86 virtualization in the enterprise.

The importance of VSAN and NSX to VMware’s SDDC Strategy

I know this is an understatement, but VSAN and NSX are very important VMware. Not just because they both introduce two new markets for VMware but also because it represents a shift in the position of the hypervisor in the data center. VMware needs convergence to maintain relevance.

So — while staying positive — I’d like to share my "ten reasons" why I think VMware is leading — and will continue to lead — the hyperconverged marketplace. 1 — Hyperconverged Is About Software , Not Hardware. Hyperconverged solutions derive their value from the hypervisor being able to support all infrastructure functions in software, and without the need for separate dedicated hardware, such as a storage array or fibre channel switch.  VMware vSphere.

Citrix XenClient vs VMware View Client

Virtualized Greek

My overall impression was that it was an interesting technology but the hardware support was too limited. VMware View Client is based on VMware Player/Workstation technology. There’s not a modern Windows laptop or Desktop configuration that I can think that wouldn’t support a standard corporate installation of VMware View. VMware View traditionally hasn’t had the large enterprise management tools Citrix is known to provide.

VMware’s grand plan to rule the world (or at least the data center)

I just went on a Twitter brain dump of my predictions on where VMware is going ultimately with their plan on living beyond their market leading server virtualization technology and eventual data center domination. Again, VMware isn’t sweating bullets.

Does VMware know Cloud is all about the Developers?

Virtualized Greek

I’m a huge fan of VMware products. VMware has long been the thought leader in x86 virtualization products both on the desktop and in the data center. This is where I believe VMware is having difficulty in their vision.

Can VMware NSX succeed where others have failed?

Virtualized Greek

Prior to VMware purchasing Nicira, the company was one of a handful of SDN players on the market. Prior to VMware’s purchase of Nicira, I had personally not heard of the company. However, once VMware purchased the company for $1.2B By virtue of VMware’s dominant position in the x86 virtualization industry and the sheer amount of monies VMware paid for the company there was bound to be a great deal of attention paid to the product. Building a VMware-Formatted Cumulus VX Vagrant Box

Scott Lowe

In this post, I’m going to walk you through the process I used to build a Vagrant box for Cumulus VX that will work with VMware desktop hypervisors (like VMware Fusion or VMware Workstation ). Although Cumulus Networks offers several different versions of Cumulus VX to download, they do not (strangely enough) offer a Vagrant box that will work with VMware’s desktop hypervisors. This allows you to test Cumulus Linux without needing compatible network hardware.

I’ve always felt kind of uneasy about the Cisco/VMware relationship.
