  • Microsoft will reportedly soon make troubleshooting on Windows 11 easier.
  • The company is inching closer to introducing an easy way of reinstalling and repairing Windows 11 that will preserve local files.

Microsoft is about to streamline the arduous process of reinstalling Windows on a PC with a new feature expected to hit the popular operating system soon. Per a report by Windows Latest, the new feature, Fix Problems using Windows Update, will come as a part of Windows Update in Windows 11.

The painstakingly lengthy task of Windows reinstallation currently involves the In-Place Upgrade that uses the Media Creation Tool, known to cause concerns regarding the retainment of local files. Soon to be replaced by Fix Problems using Windows Update, users should be able to do it quickly without the trepidation that previously accompanied Windows reinstallation or recovery.

The much-desired new feature will enable users to reinstall, update, and repair Windows 11 without needing an external flash drive and, more importantly, without losing files stored on the computer’s drive, including documents, software applications, multimedia (pictures, videos), or anything else.

Specifically, the Windows 11 settings page reads: “reinstall your current version of Windows (your apps, files, and settings will be preserved),” though it is unclear how fast it will work.

The feature has been available as beta in Build 25905 for the Canary Channel. Windows Latest spotted that Microsoft placed it in the public Windows 11 test versions after six months of internal testing, meaning the new feature could be ready for a broader release.

The upcoming Moment 5 Cumulative Update in February or March 2024, which is a minor one compared to the annual update for the OS, includes:

  • A stylus-based writing/drawing
  • Ability to uninstall apps packed by Microsoft (Cortana, Edge)
  • Change Bing with Google (and possibly other search engines) in the taskbar
  • A character count for Notepad

Once it is rolled out to the public, expected by Windows Latest through the Windows 11 Moment 5 Cumulative Update, users can access the feature under Settings > System > Recovery.
