AT&T Networks Suffer Major Outage, Authorities Investigate Nationwide Issue

Thousands of AT&T users were hit by a nationwide outage on the 22nd of February 2024, with reports of significant disruption to services such as text messaging and mobile calls in several cities across the U.S. Following hours of disrupted services, the company announced that services had been restored to normal.

The outages began around 4:00 a.m. ET and peaked at more than 70,000 reported incidents at 8:30 a.m. ET. The outage affected AT&T user’s capabilities to connect to emergency services, including fire department calls and 911. Local governments issued bulletins recommending the use of landlines or rival carriers.

The company refuted claims that the outage occurred due to a cybersecurity incident. A company spokesperson claimed the outage occurred due to an incorrectly applied process during a network expansion operation. Overall, over 58,000 outage reports were filed during the incident.

Federal bodies such as the FCC and FBI also stated that they were investigating the outage and were collaborating with safety authorities and the company. However, they did not say exactly how many customers were affected. AT&T’s share prices slid by more than 2% following the outage.
