4 Top Training Trends To Look Out for in 2023

Discover the corporate learning and development trends to watch for this year.

January 20, 2023

Several changes and developments affected the working landscape last year. How will they shape corporate training and L&D? Christina Gialleli, director of People Ops, Epignosis, discusses the trends to expect in both what and how companies train employees this year.

As we gear up to move into the new year, it is a good time to reflect on what 2022 brought and how it will affect 2023 training objectives.

Changes to the working landscape (including a continuing shift to remote or hybrid work models) transformed how we look at training. We also saw advances in technology, a greater awareness of and concern for mental health, and a spike in inflation.

All of this affected our personal and professional lives. They will also shape company learning and development (L&D) strategies in the new year.

Let us look at how you can learn from these changes and offer better training in 2023.

Training Trends for 2023 Focus on Changing Work Styles and Individual Roles

Learning and development trends for 2023 will largely reflect companies’ efforts to adapt to new ways of working. We will see training address everything from growing reliance on digital solutions to more specialized roles at work to a greater emphasis on employee well-being.

While these are not exactly new ideas in L&D, their expanded role means a new way of looking at training in its content and delivery.

Here are four trends you will see in what and how we train employees in 2023.

1. Greater focus on digital skills

The universal shift to digital-first interaction, from remote work to online commerce to virtual collaboration, means digital skills have never been more critical to business. Not only do you need to adopt the right technology, but you also need to ensure your team is up to speed and comfortable using it.

To stay at the forefront of your business, your employees, management, and leadership must understand and apply technology to improve processes. That means a focus on digital literacy.

The need for digital skills in today’s workplace is no longer optional; they are a must. To help your team keep up, you will want to offer training in new technology and processes in addition to training on job-specific skills.

2. More investment in continuous customized learning

Today’s training solutions make providing employees with ongoing, tailored training easier. Adopting an approach of lifelong employee learning helps people do their jobs better and boosts their engagement at work and in training.

For instance, extending training beyond onboarding to make it an ongoing pursuit helps employees keep up with the latest skills and content related to their work. Your team members will be more confident and satisfied with their work. And you will reap the benefits of a dedicated, skilled workforce.

Customizing training to the learners also ensures employees are confident in their jobs. More robust learning management system (LMS) options let you prepare your team for the future as jobs continue to become more specialized. Here are some tips on making the most of your L&D strategy by making it custom and continuous:

  • Meet with employees regularly to discuss their career goals and learning needs.
  • Use your LMS to create custom dashboards that point individuals to relevant training.
  • Offer continuous learning opportunities by regularly updating your training library.

Investing in custom and continuous education opportunities benefits your employees and the overall business.

3. An emphasis on well-being training

As companies and individuals re-evaluate the importance of work-life balance, the kinds of training they will adopt will not all be job specific. This year will see L&D strategies with a greater emphasis on supporting employee health and well-being.

Increased job flexibility as more roles went remote put a spotlight on the importance of maintaining a healthy work-life balance. Higher levels of burnout over the last few years also shed light on the real risk of overwork and stress to employee health and happiness.

In the coming months, companies will offer more courses to improve mental, physical, and financial well-being. These can be skills for personal wellness and training that improve the work environment. They might include content like:

  • Fighting burnout
  • Maintaining a work-life balance
  • Productivity and time management
  • Understanding diversity and inclusion
  • Mindfulness and stress management

Financial wellness will also be a topic of interest to many. New research by TalentLMS, Enrich, and Tapcheck shows that 7 in 10 employees are more concerned about their financial well-beingOpens a new window due to recession talk.

Employers can (and will) respond to employee concerns with courses to help employees weather demanding jobs and a volatile economy.

4. Leadership development aimed at boosting employee retention

Every successful organization has strong leadership at its core. Poor leadership may lead to low employee engagement and high turnover rates. Companies that want to retain top talent will give their leaders the skills to improve the employee experience, foster teamwork, and create a safe working environment.

These skills will help current leaders inspire their teams, manage and resolve conflict, delegate effectively, and make strong decisions. And it is not just today’s leaders who benefit from training in leadership skills.

Many companies will prepare for growth in a competitive market by offering leadership development training to those stepping into those roles.

Making leadership training a part of standard employee development creates a pool of qualified candidates who can be promoted from within. This saves the costs of recruiting and onboarding new talent.

This year’s training trends will include focusing on content that will help guarantee strong ongoing leadership.

Let Your Training Set You Up for Success in 2023 and Beyond

We are excited about the opportunities L&D has in this new year. Businesses must continue to adapt to support their employees in new situations. But whatever the future holds, there will be a growing need for upskilling and reskilling employees with diverse and engaging content.

You will create a training strategy that supports a healthy work environment by focusing on content beyond technical skills and compliance training. Employees with access to relevant and useful learning will be more satisfied at work, and retention will improve.

Overall, the goal (and outcome) of these top training trends will be to help your company thrive as you continue to navigate change.
