Today, one show ends and another begins. On the day the most recent Star Wars show, The Book of Boba Fett, finished its first season, Disney just announced that Star Wars: Obi-Wan Kenobi will be its next show. It’ll debut on May 25, the evening before Star Wars Celebration in Anaheim, CA.
Along with the news came a new plot description and poster. Here’s the first poster:
And here’s the plot description: “The story begins 10 years after the dramatic events of Star Wars: Revenge of the Sith where Obi-Wan Kenobi faced his greatest defeat—the downfall and corruption of his best friend and Jedi apprentice, Anakin Skywalker, who turned to the dark side as evil Sith Lord Darth Vader.”
The keyword there is “Begins.” That suggests that the show, which is officially “a limited series,” will cover probably not just one or two stories, but potentially the full decade between the start here and the beginning of A New Hope. The poster also gives us a tiny tease of Obi’s new threads. Here’s a closer look.
Well, first of all, the twin suns strongly suggest Tatooine, which isn’t a surprise. That said, the outfit is very desert. Very un-Jedi. Very much what you’d expect from a man trying to blend in so he can watch an important little kid. (Which does make you wonder, why was Obi-Wan wearing his Jedi robes when he meets Luke in A New Hope? Did he know this was the start of his adventure?) Also, his right hand does seem to be holding his lightsaber, which is pretty cool. I’d buy the Black Series for sure.
In addition to Ewan McGregor, Obi-Wan stars Hayden Christensen (returning as Darth Vader), Moses Ingram, Joel Edgerton, Bonnie Piesse, Kumail Nanjiani, Indira Varma, Rupert Friend, O’Shea Jackson Jr., Sung Kang, Simone Kessell, and Benny Safdie.
And again, the first episode is May 25, the night before Star Wars Celebration. That suggests Obi-Wan will be a big presence there, if you can watch it and avoid spoilers.
