Huawei's next-generation BSS: Agility and openness help carriers develop 5G services

5G's rapid development creates valuable opportunities for global carriers to innovate technologies and services, which will accelerate carriers' digital transformation and reshape their operation modes.
Carriers in China have released multi-dimensional business models, which require the business system to support multi-dimensional combinations of products and offerings. Carriers in Latin America require time to market for new functions to be shorter, which, in turn, means the business system needs to be more flexible and agile.
Carriers in Malaysia hope to achieve IT transformation and innovate services based on an open business system. From 2G to 3G and 4G, most support systems on carriers' live networks evolve based on 2C and 2H services. Different services are carried in different systems that are not connected, which complicates service handling.
The operation mode based on a single product cannot meet the operation requirements in the 5G era. A Business Support System (BSS) that can integrate services is required to enable rapid development and innovation of new 5G services.

Huawei BSS is ready for all 5G scenarios

With a cloud native architecture, Huawei has built a next-generation BSS that is ready for all 5G scenarios. This system is based on the TM Forum Open Digital Architecture (ODA). It builds core data models (customers, products, and offerings) based on the TM Forum Information Framework (SID).
The system provides multiple logical customer relationship management systems, based on different service or business models such as 2C fixed-mobile convergence (FMC) or 2B FMC. It also provides business models such as IoT, MVNO, or 5G to-be business solution (CSMF+) based on the advanced network slices which can be realized on a single BSS platform.
The system provides agile supports as below:

  • Configurability – the entire process of offering quotation, order capture, and order fulfillment can be configured, driven by products and offerings.

  • Abundant assets – more than 400 out of the box templates, based on best practices, shorten the product and offering release time from weeks to days.

  • Trial and error – support for greenfield development means new services can be launched within weeks or months in a cost-effective way, and support is provided for extension for commercial deployment.

  • Software-as-a-Service (SaaS) – based on cloud native architecture, the system can run on private, public, or hybrid cloud. The system runs microservices and supports full container deployment, and auto scaling.

For 5G to-be, high-value private networks, a China operator faced the challenge of replicating industry experience while improving the efficiency of operations and provisioning, which was low. CSMF+ has been built independently, based on Huawei's deep understanding of networks. It is designed to streamline network modeling and analysis and produce standard products and offerings, by helping to efficiently replicate the experience of nine vertical industries and five major application scenarios in the province.
CSMF+ automatically converts communication service requirements into network slice requirements based on rules. This reduces the number of parameters for complex 5G to-be offerings on the customer’s graphical user interface from more than 150 to over 10. It pre-integrates with the network side, greatly simplifying business handling and provisioning.
CSMF+ provides one-stop operation services covering pre-sales, in-sales, and after-sales, which will help China Mobile Hunan rapidly develop new 5G services.

Layered architecture and Open APIs

Huawei BSS’ design is based on a unified layered architecture. Vertically, it is an open, five-layer architecture, enabling horizontal scalability. Horizontally, heavyweight applications are decoupled, realizing a centralized architecture with elastic scalability and allowing vertical splitting.
The system also provides Open APIs compatible with TM Forum’s key API design parameters to enable service innovation:

  • Customized orchestration provides more than 300 open API and DevOps tool packages for customization.

  • Quick integration through live, network-based on API fabric orchestration and massive configurability.

  • Open ecosystems – based on APIs, the system enables the building of partner ecosystem easily, quickly, and efficiently.

One of Huawei's system integrators in Malaysia uses Huawei's BSS DevOps tool set to design, develop, and initiate local projects, achieving fast service provisioning and flexible customization. As such, the operator supports the largest telecom carrier in Malaysia in deploying the BSS, meeting its requirements for fast service innovation and provisioning.
Huawei's next-generation, 5G-enabled, full-stack BSS uses a layered architecture and open APIs to support the rapid development of new 5G services through strong orchestration and configuration capabilities. It helps carriers build a thriving 5G service ecosystem based on the open architecture.
