The new year is here and, whether you love it or hate it, that means new year's resolutions.

Some cybersecurity professionals loathe making resolutions, but others are inclined to restart and take stock on their personal and professional lives. If you're looking to start making changes in 2023, here are some of my favorite strategic ways to jump start the new year.

Pick a resolution and make it known

For myself, I need subconscious reminders to keep me going on my resolutions. Placing sticky note reminders on my desk, mirror, or nightstand helps me remember my goals. I like to use positive language when reinforcing my goals so it's more of a gentle nudge than a rude slap.

Make your resolution with goals that are fluid

I can't go zero to 100 with my goals; that's an instant way for me to abandon them all together. Instead, I try to have bite-sized goals that are flexible with my schedule. For example, I want to read 20 books this year. I've made this flexible by allowing my busy months to have more leeway if I feel I need to relieve that pressure. By doing this, I won't beat myself up if I can't maintain a certain pace to reach my goals.

Have a game plan

How do you want to achieve your resolutions? Do you need reminders? Feel free to test a few different ways to implement your goals into your everyday routine until you can get into a rhythm to reach your resolutions.
Your resolutions are yours and for YOU

My most successful resolutions are those that directly impact me and my life. I don't always like to share them, either, as some are more personal than others. And you know what, that is all okay! Your resolutions are meant for you and your lifestyle, not for others. If you want to share them, that is totally up to you. Accountability can be helpful, but know these goals are meant to improve your life, not the other way around.

Regardless if your resolutions are personal or professional, the SecureWorld News team wishes you the best of luck in the year ahead!
