Growing in a Down Economy

SPF13

Trimming the Fat I am all in favor of trimming the fat. Every company has inefficiencies and employees that aren’t adding value to the company. This exercise of fat trimming should be an ongoing exercise, quarterly. If a company larger than 200 employees is firing 10% or more of their employees they have a serious management issue. No well run company can operate efficiently with 10%+ of “fat”, and no company can expect to grow while letting go 10%+ of their staff.

StartupCamp Sydney: Review of six excellent Startups created in 24 hours

Trends in the Living Networks

This is actually extraordinary. Today it is possible to create an operating service that can have real market value within 24 hours. This is a fairly new phenomenon, enabled very significantly by the platforms such as widespread APIs, programming libraries, application stores, aggregated advertising, and other elements that can be combined and recombined in ways limited only by the imagination.

Behold the Power of Social Media: Old School Meets Web 2.0

Victus pro Scientia Opus -- Food for the Knowledge

This weekend, I joined some friends for a couple of beverages at a venerable bar in Philadelphia. McGillin's Olde Ale House is the oldest continually operating tavern in Philadelphia, established in 1860. We ran into some minor, annoying issues with the service, surly attitudes from the bartender and waitstaff. Nothing acute, a lot of what you'd expect at a crowded bar in an urban setting (especially in Philadelphia, where pugnacity is an art form), but it aggravated me enough to Tweet about i

Get Better Network Graphs & Save Analysts Time

Many organizations today are unlocking the power of their data by using graph databases to feed downstream analytics, enahance visualizations, and more. It takes two to communicate

I'm not lost, I'm wondering

Read just about any book on how to improve your communications skills and you will find that one of the most important aspects of interpersonal communications is the ability to listen. Unless, of course, you are reading a book about helping autistic people “learn to communicate&# , in which case it is all about trying to get them to listen, and pay attention, to you ; very rarely will those types of books try to help you, a non-autistic person, figure out how to listen to an autistic pers

I have received an invite to a conference in San Francisco on Collective Intelligence. Unfortunately, I won't make it (a bit too far from London!). It seems that this subject is gaining a lot of interest and success stories. I like the diagram above that is given on this conference web page.

This was about the time I was jumping into the world of social media beyond the blog, so it seemed a reasonable thing to transfer my book list onto Shelfari.

Software leaders who are building applications based on Large Language Models (LLMs) often find it a challenge to achieve reliability. It’s no surprise given the non-deterministic nature of LLMs. To effectively create reliable LLM-based (often with RAG) applications, extensive testing and evaluation processes are crucial.
