The network industry has focused on protocols for a long time because of the need interoperate hardware devices between vendors. The Second are is the higher level layers such as load balancing. If it’s happening at the application level now then why continue to add functionality at the hardware layer?

According to Martin, the term SDN originally referred to a change in the network architecture to include a) decoupling the distribution model of the control plane from the data plane; and b) generalized rather than fixed function forwarding hardware. What about virtualized load balancers? What about NX-OS, JUNOS, or EOS?

Recep will cover the hardware side of ONP; Gershon will cover the software side of ONP (referred to as ONS). ONP fits into this picture by performing VTEP functions in hardware (at line rate). Some of these services naturally should run on the top-of-rack (ToR) switch, like load balancing or security services.

True, both have made huge strides in the hardware world to allow for blade repurposing, I/O, address, and storage naming portability, etc. However, in the software domain, each still relies on multiple individual products to accomplish tasks such as SW provisioning, HA/availability, VM management, load balancing, etc.
