According to Martin, the term SDN originally referred to a change in the network architecture to include a) decoupling the distribution model of the control plane from the data plane; and b) generalized rather than fixed function forwarding hardware. What about virtualized load balancers? Or virtualized firewalls?

The ability to virtualize the network devices such as firewalls, IPS and load balancers also means that these once physical devices that have discrete interfaces can be controlled by software. The question is if IT has the ability to implement and support a physical data center let alone a Software-Defined Data Center (SDDC).
