The plan calls for sending 3,232 satellites (down slightly from the originally planned 3,236) into low Earth orbit by 2029. Those organizations include telecommunications companies ( Verizon, Vodafone and Vodacom , NTT and Sky Perfect JSAT ) as well as NASA , DARPA and the Pentagon’s Defense Innovation Unit.

But Project Kuiper aims to take advantage of synergies with Amazon’s other business lines, ranging from online retail sales to Amazon Prime Video and Amazon Web Services. The rest would have to be launched by 2029. To meet that schedule, Project Kuiper plans to produce up to four satellites per day at the Kirkland factory.

Project Kuiper’s satellites are to be launched in five phases, and service would begin once Amazon launched the first 578 satellites. Under the terms of the FCC’s order, Amazon will have to launch half of its satellites by mid-2026, and the rest of them by mid-2029.
