This past week Microsoft and VMware announced Azure VMware Solutions, which allows customers to run the VMware software stack on Azure (an arrangement similar in nature to VMware Cloud on AWS, as I understand it).

Guessing the next big technology career path

For example, a question I get all the time is “Have I missed the boat on VMware?” But, just as Novell was the best network operating system in the late 90’s/00’s, timing is everything. I used my Cisco/Novell comparison for a reason. They didn’t compete for customers but they did compete for system engineering talent.

2013 may FINALLY be the year of VDI and BYOD

This is not because of some fancy new feature in VMware View or Citrix XenDesktop but due to a new feature of Windows 8. This means that basically, just like Hyper-V the hypervisor is native to the operating system. You can think VMware vSphere but with a GUI. I was close in my prediction.

Is a single management solution required for multi-hypervisor environments?

That proved to be more of apples to oranges comparison, but I think the OS example is a good comparison. I’ve also seen how difficult it is to manage both the product and operations model. For example, a test environment may be more suitable for KVM while production workloads run on VMware vSphere.

VMware recently released a reference design guide for NSX-T; see here for more details. Dimitri de Swart has a write-up on LAMP stacks made easy with VMware and Puppet. Looks like PKS, the joint Kubernetes effort from VMware and Pivotal, has gone GA (see this VMware blog post ) with initial support for vSphere and GCP.
