Project Kuiper’s two prototypes — Kuipersat 1 and 2 — are meant to test the hardware and system operations in advance of the expected production ramp-up. Amazon is readying a 172,000-square-foot facility in nearby Kirkland to start turning out production models of its satellite by the end of the year.

They’re designed to test the hardware as well as the software, ground-based facilities and procedures that will be used for the full constellation. At least half of the 3,236 satellites will have to be placed in orbit by mid-2026 to satisfy the requirements of Amazon’s license from the Federal Communications Commission.

The tests conducted over the past month served as a demonstration of those synergies as well as confirmation that Project Kuiper’s hardware, software and ground-based infrastructure are on the right track. Engineers test the Project Kuiper satellite network in McAllen, Texas. The rest would have to be launched by 2029.
