Amazon WorkSpaces , the company’s virtual desktop service, just unveiled its first device for end users, a $195 product created by directly repurposing the hardware design for Amazon’s Fire TV Cube. “We wanted to take all the savings that we could get from manufacturing and turn that into lower prices for customers overall.”

In my Linux migration initial progress report , I provided an early assessment of the Linux distribution that I thought I would use moving forward. Since that time, though, I’ve pivoted a bit and selected a different Linux distribution as the operating system (OS) for my primary laptop moving forward. Performance.

Lightbits has their own operating system, LightOS, which runs on industry-standard x64 servers from Dell, HP, Lenovo, etc. To further enhance the performance of a server running LightOS (a “brick” in their terminology), Lightbits also offers a hardware acceleration card called the LightField.

The first one, on virtualizing the network, did highlight an important development regarding hardware offloads for Geneve, the next-generation network overlay encapsulation protocol. Intel announced yesterday that the new XL710 network adapters (which are 40Gbps adapters) will support Geneve hardware offloads. Closing Thoughts.
