Millions of point-of-sale systems and hotel room locks can be hacked by temporarily placing a small, inexpensive device several inches away from their card readers. The device, due to be presented Sunday at the DEF CON conference in Las Vegas, is the creation of Weston Hecker, a senior security engineer at Rapid7. It was inspired by MagSpoof, another device created last year by security researcher Samy Kamkar.

Omni Hotels was hit by point-of-sale malware

Omni Hotels & Resorts has reported that point-of-sale systems at some of its properties were hit by malware targeting payment card information. The attack on the systems of the luxury hotel chain follows similar breaches of point-of-sale systems at various hotels and retailers like Hyatt Hotels, Target, Starwood Hotels & Resorts Worldwide and Hilton Worldwide Holdings.

Trump hotel chain fined over data breaches

Trump Hotel Collection has arrived at a settlement with New York Attorney General Eric T. The hotel chain, one of the businesses of Republican presidential candidate Donald Trump, has agreed to pay US$50,000 in penalties and promised to take measures to beef up its data security practices, according to the attorney general’s office. The chain is one of many hotels and retailers that have been hit recently by malware that skimmed payment card information.
