I’m a big fan of plain text-based formats and tools, for a variety of reasons. As a result, I’ve moved almost all of my writing into plain text formats, primarily Markdown (MultiMarkdown, to be specific), and I recently spent a couple of months experimenting to see if a plain text-based productivity system would work for me as well.

Google is adding Markdown support to Google Docs on the web, letting you format your document using text shortcuts rather than keyboard ones. In a blog post announcing the feature , Google says it’s doing this through its autocorrect feature, so it will automatically format the text for you after you type it in Markdown format.

According to a followup tweet , leaving the conversation will make your Twitter handle appear as plain text in the tweet where you’re mentioned, rather than the hyperlink someone would normally see if they tap your Twitter handle.

It’s hard to keep up with all the interesting, important, or just plain fun things you come across on the web. There, of course, are other less specific alternatives — for example, note apps such as Evernote and Keep will save and tag article links. You can share with others and edit titles, tags, and descriptions. Instapaper.

Almost 2 years ago, I set out on an experiment in plain text productivity. In the last few weeks, though, I’ve revisited the idea of a plain text productivity system as part of my migration to Ubuntu Linux as my primary desktop OS, and I think I’ve resolved some of the issues that were present in my last attempt.

Injection via input fields : This flaw enabled users to input HTML code, which was then rendered as HTML upon output, rather than treated as regular text. Abuse of kick voting panel : Exploiters abused this vulnerability by injecting HTML code, typically in the form of an image tag (<img>), into the kick voting panel.

Plain text is a thing of the past. You can dim your text so that you don’t need to focus and concentrate on the current paragraph that needs to be edited.
